Anti-HST Petition Meets B.C. Legal Benchmark

Anti-HST petition meets legal benchmark in B.C.

VICTORIA — Organizers of a petition to repeal B.C.'s harmonized sales tax said Monday they now have signatures from 15 per cent of people in all 85 ridings across the province.
That number puts the group well ahead of the legal requirement for a successful petition, greatly increasing the likelihood it will pass and compel the provincial government to consider dropping the unpopular tax.

Even though our Provincial Government keeps saying how this new tax will be good for our Province, most of the people here are totally against it. Bill Vander Zalm started this petition and it sky-rocketed.

It was funny to hear how Bill got involved in this one. Many thought the effort he put forth was more in the interests of political gain rather than anti HST.

I'm not so sure personally but who really knows, he's a Politician?

We voted on taxes in our state not too long ago and the people voted for no more taxes. The result........reductions in police force, road repairs, fire dept hands, no park maintenance, etc and so on. People are pissed because of these things and yet......they are the ones who voted for no more taxes.

The problem here isn't so much about taxes as it is government spending of our taxes. Government spending is spiraling out of control and we're sick of seeing out tax revenues go toward nothing.

His campaign received way more signatures than needed so it will be very interesting to see what happens....

Actually his campaign was very successful, or so I heard. Now the real work begins as they have to call each person who signed the petition to verify their signatures.

Even if 1 in 3 verifies their signature which is apparently the average, he'll still have plenty of signatures for it to go to parliament.

I wouldn't expect anything to happen for another year or two by which time the damage caused by the HST will have been done.

    No problem LS

The problem with the HST is it hits low income families the hardest as the essentials are what's being affected by this tax such as food, gas, etc.
