    Juvenile crime and punishment

About a week ago, I found myself in a conversation with a coworker about juvenile crime and punishment. Personally, I feel it's justified in some cases to sentence juveniles as adults when found guilty of serious crimes such as rape, murder, etc.

What surprised me most about the conversation was she was very much against adult sentencing for juveniles regardless of crime. Her logic was that they are still kids and by punishing them as adults you are robbing them of their childhood.

What are your thoughts on juvenile crime and punishment? Do you think there are times when a juvenile should be tried/punished as an adult or do you believe differently?

I think they should be tried as adults. They robbed themselves of their childhood when they did the crime. If they can do such horrible things then they deserve the punishment. The only caveat would be if the child was mentally challenged and didn't know right from wrong in what they were doing.

I believe they should be tried as adults in rape and murder cases.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

If they know the difference between right and wrong, they can take the consequences for their actions. What if some teenager was going around killing people's pets for fun, or breaking into houses and stealing things? Would anyone really want to say, "Oh he's just being a kid, don't be too hard on him"? No, that's obviously wrong behavior that needs to be punished.

As far as being robbed of their childhood... Maybe they need to be robbed of it if they consider a good time to be committing crimes. If that's their idea of a happy childhood, I wouldn't feel guilty at all about taking it away.

I feel very much the same Ray; if you know it's a crime then you deserve to do the time. I think a criminal is a criminal and age shouldn't have much to do with it.

If you can clearly demonstrate the crime committed was done by a person of sound mind and body and that they know the difference between right and wrong they deserve an equal and opposite punishment that fits the crime.
