Lance Armstrong Blasts "60 Minutes" Report

I watched '60 Minutes' last night and was it ever damaging for Lance Armstrong. It's getting harder to believe that he's telling the truth.

Lance Armstrong blasts CBS' "60 Minutes" report - The Early Show - CBS News

(CBS News) Lance Armstrong, who declined to be interviewed by "60 Minutes" for an explosive report Sunday night, has posted a statement on his publicist's website, facts4lance.com, in response to the doping allegations made by fellow cyclists Tyler Hamilton and George Hincapie.
In part, it says, "CBS's reporting on this subject has been replete with broken promises, false assurances and selective reliance on witnesses upon whom no reputable journalist would rely."

The response comes after the "60 Minutes" report seemed to dismantle Armstrong's inspiring story.

On "The Early Show" Monday, CBS News Chief Investigative Correspondent Armen Keteyian said Armstrong's life story is one for the ages -- he survived a lethal form of cancer to go on and win the world's most grueling bike race a record seven straight times, never once, Armtrong claims, resorting to illegal drugs that infected his sport.

But on Sunday night, Armstrong's inspiring story appeared to come crashing down.

The "60 Minutes" investigation reconfigured Armstrong's iconic image from American hero into, allegedly, a secretive, systematic user of performance-enhancing drugs, including the blood-boosting drug EPO.

Correspondent Scott Pelley's two-part report was built around the eyewitness account of Tyler Hamilton, Armstrong's top lieutenant for the first three of his seven Tour de France victories.
Pelley asked, "You saw Lance Armstrong inject EPO?"
Hamilton replied, "Yeah, like we all did, like I did many, many times."

Pelley reported, "Tyler Hamilton always denied doping until this moment. He's an Olympic gold medalist who kept the secrets of his sport for 14 years. He refused to cooperate with the federal investigation of Armstrong. But in June, he was served a subpoena which forced him to testify before the grand jury."

I watched it also. It really doesn't surprise me in the least bit. "Perfomance enhancing" drugs are a part of sports and will always be. Some of these athletes are paid 10's of millions to win. Some athletes can make or break an entire franchise or a sport. With that kind of pressure, it's not surprising some look to get any edge they can. It's in every sport and always will be. I'm going to bet it's just many have not been caught.

He's denied it for SO long and yet everyone seems to be coming out of the woodwork saying he did. I wonder how all this is going to play out...

Carl Lewis was actually guilty as well, and was shielded by the US Athletics association.

We also must not forget that because Lance had cancer certain medications were given to him that were performance enhancing as well, but on a medical basis. His opponents of course did not have the same luxury. Too much at stake, and people want to be in the limelight. It is a guaranteed screw up.

This is just plain ridiculous and is nothing more than a turd hunt to dig up dirt all in the interests of scandal, ratings and money. I like to believe Lance is clean however, many in the sport weren't for a number of years hence the strict drug testing multiple times/year; not just the Tour de France.

Whether he used or didn't use is m00t because those were different times where a lot used and the ones that got caught are now turning the sport upside down to save their own @ss3s.

There's a lot more at stake here than Lance's reputation, how about the LiveStrong Foundation and all the good they've done in the ongoing fight against cancer? Not to mention the muddying of the Tour and cycling in general; all in the interests of lining someones pockets.

It's stories like this that make me sick. Not so much because of what's being reported, more of why is it being reported?

That is a very good point Duke.

The problem is, if you are the winner, scandals are not beneficial. If you don't make it, scandals can be a way of survival. It is a recipe for disaster, simple as that. Sadly, it is also a race between scientists (those who make the products, and those who test the urine samples / blood and what not). Several winners of the Tour and the Giro have been caught years afterwards, but by then the results are irreversible.

The only solution would be to give the riders a free reign in what to use, but that is just setting them up for early deaths as well. Though if memory serves quite a few cyclists die very young (Pantani comes to mind), so there sadly seems to be something majorly wrong with the sport as it is practiced nowadays.
