    Mind over matter

Regardless of how strong a person you are mentally, there are always instances where you find yourself affected by your environment. It can be as simple as a bad situation at work, a bad situation at home, waking up in an off mood, financial woes, or any type of personal hardship.

I find myself particular susceptible to what goes on around me now more than I ever have in the past and I find myself wondering if this is the culmination of a life filled with experiences both good and bad or if I'm just turning into a crotchety old fart?

I failed to mention that I was not this way in my youth.

Lately I've been making a conscious effort to not let things get to me and I've noticed a rather sharp decrease in days where I'm pissed off. In fact, my overall demeanor has changed and I find myself thinking the most clearly I have in a long time.

My question to you is, do you think that the way you typically feel is completely avoidable if you put your mind to it? Do you believe the mind takes the drivers seat if you allow it or does the matter control your day no matter how much logic you throw at it?

    Please explain.

    This, yes.
I'm having the same thing, and it kind of feels good too.
I definately feel I can overrule the feeling when setting my mind to it, simply because I sometimes have no other choice, like with this 3 year old running circles around me, or when driving for example (I take my driving very seriously).

But the old fart effect is definately hitting us. Next to our genes we're shaped by our environment and everything happening to us, and the latter is outgrowing the effect genes have when years pass by, at least that's what I believe. Perhaps we can meet up in a mall sometime and diss youngsters

    Re: Mind over matter

When i was younger, i was so inspired by certain things, certain people and honestly, i could not wait to wake up to go to work I often used to be in bed at 11pm and then jumping out at 3.30am, so i could get in and get stuff done.

I guess as you get older and perhaps things dont turn out as you hope, you get a bit cynical, less enthusiastic and work become a chore, rather than a joy. Instead of seeing the glass half full, its now half empty. Instead of expecting a good day, you are praying it isnt a bad day.

Its only my perspective, but thats how i feel I sometimes wonder when i changed

You arent alone Duke and you really have to set your mind to it.

But the knockbacks and knockdowns make that hard to do

Actually, I'm not getting what I want out of life exactly but I recognize that I have a lot of good in my life. In fact, I'm not where I want to be but I'm certainly not destitute by any means. I have a steady income, a roof over my head, means to cloth and dress myself, a great daughter, supportive family, and friends both irl and online.

I truly think the older I get the more set in my ways I'm getting and that in itself may contribute a lot to my mood or peace of mind.

    Re: Mind over matter

For me, I'm an early riser and just before getting up, maybe ten/fifteen minutes or so, as I awaken more I know if I'm in a Great mood (which is usually the case) or if I'm 'Off'. It's a choice for me. I'd rather be at Peace and happy, and as I'm a Grateful person already, if I find I'm 'off' I start on the path of naming things quietly to myself, what I'm Grateful for, and there are loads of things. Usually within ten minutes as I switch on the coffee pot, I'm already catching myself smiling. If I need proof that I'm smiling, I go to the mirror! Even if I'm disheveled, I still appreciate the morning and the 'adventures' of the day, or the peace of the day, whichever. So yes, for me, it's mind over matter.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
