B.C. Wildfires Rage Out Of Control

Our province of B.C. is in a hot, dry spell right now, has been for days and forecasted to continue, a dire situation.

Ground and air crews were fighting 230 wildfires across B.C. Sunday as an estimated 7,000 people were forced to flee flames that have terrified several communities, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.
On Saturday, nearly 100 new fires sprang up and the province has been marshalling all the personnel it can to battle the flames, protect property and keep people safe.

Some rains would be welcome ... B.C. is big, so it is not that easy to respond quickly to new outbreaks .

Oh my gosh.. it's such an odd time with fires appearing in different places. Like Vautrin states, BC is big......and distance in this case is not good. Hope people stay safe.

All of B.C. is keeping a close watch on these fires, time to think of nothing else. SO many evacuations, with a whole entire city being one of them. Some human caused, some are lightning strikes, add to that wind and the fires move quickly.

You would think that a large number of these fires could have been prevented? Even the ones caused by lightning - wood and shrubs don't burn as well when they're wet. And that could mean valuable time to prevent fires from getting out of control.

in the bud. It is not like Canada has no resources to put in preventative measures. That being said, I wonder what such a system would actually look like. Satellite imaging techniques? Flying helicopters over areas after the thunderstorms have died down? Lots of questions (and I am not an expert here).

Re: B.C. Wildfires Rage Out Of Control

One of the biggest problems we have in BC is the Pine Beetle. This thing has been devastating our forests and turning them into dry kindling.

As you can see in the images below the infestation is quite bad and these trees are just fuel for any fire.

The last time I went to 100 mile house much of the drive in that area was either dead or dying pine. Add a little lightening, a careless cigarette butt and hectares of forests are burning out of control by the next day.

This is not the source of all our problems but it certainly isn't helping.

Like everyone else we're experiencing climate change. Our forests used to be colder for longer so the peat, ground cover, etc., would hold moisture later into the season and help with wild fires.

Now it's dryer and hotter for longer so the ground cover only helps speed the fires along earlier in the season.

Lastly, BC is pretty hilly (for the most part) so we get our share of wind which is why few of our fires are ever isolated. They are all very much alive and have infinite amounts of fuel to keep them going.

It's also very difficult to reach a lot of these fires along there fronts which contributes to them burning out of control.

Seems like some of Europe are struggling with more fires than normal. We heard today that Spain is now on high alert.

I hope all of you in the areas where these fires have taken hold stay safe.

Most of Central, Coastal, and Interior is covered with travelling smoke from the still burning fires.

We had a small one 8km. from us, but thanks to a quick-thinking motorist who called it in and all close firefighters/trucks in the region, it was out in approximately three hours. There is one burning now across the lake and, so far, no homes have been lost.

We are praying for rain as it is still hot, dry, and no rain has been forecasted until the end of next week.

Yikes, had not thought of global warming contributing to this particular problem, through the decaying health of the forests in B.C. That is certainly a recipe for a disaster. I do hope, that once these fires have been put down, that trees will be planted that are better suited to the changed climate, as that may improve the resistance of these forests for future outbreaks.

Re: B.C. Wildfires Rage Out Of Control

We've got a few fires around our area now, too. Haze, smoke everywhere, though we did have a bit of rain on Sunday which helped for the day at least. A big festival of 17,000 people were to leave on Sunday due to a fire getting close and then it remained open, some distressed about that.
